Kerria Primary School

In April 1985 three teachers from Berzelia Primary were transferred to Kerria Primary. The school was officially opened on 1 July 1985 with the late Mr M.G. Farmer as the principal with 8 teachers. Thirty six years on, this dynamic school, situated in the heart of Atlantis, boasts a contingent of over 1400 learners and 38 teachers. The school describes their primary hurdle as that of a low socio-economic environment, with the majority of their pupils coming from jobless households, and approximately 30% of them residing in nearby informal settlements. Gangsterism and impoverishment are both sobering realities facing students who are unable to escape the unfortunate cycle.

The focus has been on the development of academic and sporting infrastructure in the hope that this would lead to an increase of participation and subsequent performance. The current headmaster, Mr Russel Andrews, has been extremely pragmatic in his approach to securing funding and creating partnerships towards the improvement of his school. This has resulted in a feeding scheme for his pupils and the creation of a multipurpose hall. Kerria Primary became a “Model School” in the E-Learning Game Changer initiative of the Western Cape Education Department where the school received technology to the value of R6 million with educators receiving training and every classroom turned into a “Smart Classroom”.
