Sports Skills for Life Skills (SS4LS) is a non-profit organisation (NGO) that helps students in previously disadvantaged areas, to enhance their talent in sport but also provide the opportunity to obtain a tertiary education. There are many people interested in our program, hence one of our future goals to expand and include other sporting codes that are available on the University of the Western Cape. To become a part of this program does not necessarily mean that you have to become a player. You can become part of the success of the program in various ways.Being an NGO, we depend on your generous support and continuous interest shown in Sports Skills for Life Skills. The following links are possible options that are available and can be viewed in order to support the program:
The athletes/students participate in a life skills program, which is developed specifically for the Sport skills for Life skills program by the late sport psychologist, Prof. Paul Avis. The focus of this component is based on soft skills such as: vocational skills, social skills, psychological skills and community involvement.
Vocational skills i.e. coaching skills, computer skills and business skills will increase the economical viability of each participant. These skills can assist the athlete when employed to earn an income or increase their eventual earning capacity.Social skills include communication skills, interactive skills, group co-operation skills and conflict resolution. These social skills coupled with the following psychological skills will add value to the participants’ personal involvement, i.e. understanding oneself and one’s behaviour, goal setting, functional attitude and confidence, emotional control and performance enhancement skills. The impact of this process will be evident whether on the sports field, in the work place, at home or through the participant’s involvement in his/her community.
These skills will be introduced to the athletes through workshops and their life skills development will then be monitored throughout their participation in the program by having individual follow-up sessions. It will assist participants to become the industry leaders of the future by knowing how to master these soft skills.
